How does heated air treatment work to kill lice and nits?
Heated air treatment, used by professional lice removal services, kills lice and nits through a process of desiccation (dehydration). Lice and their eggs are highly dependent on the moisture and humidity of the scalp to survive. The heated air effectively removes this moisture, causing the lice to dry out and die.
How the process works
- Specialized device: Here at Lice Care Associated Danvers, we use the Airtherm PRO which is specifically designed to treat lice with heated air. This is not a regular blow-dryer.
- Controlled heat and airflow: The device delivers heated air at a precise, comfortable temperature—cooler than a standard blow-dryer—but with a much higher flow rate. This combination is crucial for success.
- Targeted application: A special applicator tip is used to lift and separate the hair, directing the airflow close to the scalp and hair roots where lice and nits are most concentrated. This prevents hair from forming an insulating layer that would protect the bugs.
- Timed procedure: The technician follows a specific, timed pattern across the scalp, ensuring that all areas of the head are sufficiently exposed to the heated air. A full treatment typically takes about an hour.
- High efficacy: This method is effective because the unique, fragile physiology of lice makes them vulnerable to desiccation. Research has shown it to be highly effective at killing both lice and nits.
- Pesticide-free: Since it kills by dehydration, this treatment is a non-toxic, pesticide-free option. It works on “super lice,” which have developed a resistance to common chemical shampoos.
