Head lice isn’t easy to see with the untrained eye. The best way to find head lice is by using a professional screening comb that will pull any nits (lice eggs), or bugs out of the hair. I know what you’re thinking, you don’t have a professional lice comb on hand. Most people don’t have the screening tools we have at our disposal here at our lice removal clinic. SO, when you suspect head lice, the best way for you to check at home is to find a well lit area and use a comb or your finger to part the hair and look at the roots and scalp. If you see anything that you think may be a nit, blow on it. If it blows away, it is not a nit. If it remains stuck to the hair, that warrants further investigation. When looking for nits, people always look for white specs. Empty shell casings can appear white or clear. When there’s a bug in the egg, meaning it’s viable, they appear brown which makes them blend in really well with darker hair colors. Usually a lice infestation isn’t really noticeable until it has been on a person for 2-3 weeks simply because the lice and eggs are so small which is why it’s so important to screen your entire family. The actual bugs can be harder to spot because they move quickly throughout the hair and hide from the light. A full grown louse is about the size of a sesame seed, is wingless, and has six legs with claws on the end. They are unmistakable and a clear sign that you’ve got an infestation on your hands.
