Why is head lice so common?

Lice is very common in children and in turn, parents who catch it from their kids! While finding out that these little parasites have infested your beloved family can be stress inducing, the good news is that lice don’t make you sick, don’t spread disease, and are really just considered a nuisance. The reason that lice passes so easily among kids is that they tend to have frequent close contact without even realizing it- how many elementary age kids do you know with any concept of personal space? Exactly.

I always say that wherever kids are congregating, lice is spreading! While this may be unsettling, please keep in mind that lice actually prefer clean hair. Having lice is by no means an indication of personal hygiene.

Its highly unlikely for lice to spread environmentally- meaning that sharing cubbies, the seats on the bus, the rugs at school, and other surface exposures aren’t of concern like many people think. Lice are parasites meaning that they’re host dependent and really can’t survive once they’ve left a human head. Hearing this fact really throws parents and caregivers for a loop- many just can’t imagine that kids are directly touching heads that frequently.. but they are!

In summary, lice has always been just as common as it is now. Its a common childhood ailment and always has been- luckily these days there are professionals like my fabulous team at Lice Care Associates Danvers to help you end the problem quickly and efficiently!
