As a lice professional, we get asked this question all the time! The fact is that in order to be effective enough to get rid of lice in one short sitting like we do, it takes intensive training, years of experience, major attention to detail, AND gusto!!

Seriously though, home treating lice is very difficult for the average parent or caregiver for a few reasons:

First, most people don’t actually know what they’re looking for. Many clients are under the impression the head lice is white when in fact, it ranges from beige to dark brown. As you can imagine this makes it hard to see lice on medium to dark colored hair.

Another reason that its hard to get rid of lice is that many people don’t realize how important it is to screen their entire household. More often than not, caregivers only focus on the one child that they found lice on, not taking the time or realizing that every household member needs to be thoroughly checked (including all adults). When one person in the home has lice, its highly likely that other household members are also positive, even if they aren’t symptomatic yet.

Lastly, Getting rid of lice at home takes WORK. DIY treatment is absolutely possible but it takes 10-14 days of daily combing sessions. I always tell my DIY clientele that they need to comb and comb.. once they see nothing two sessions in a row, they need to comb AGAIN! Good old elbow grease and ample time will allow you to get the job done.
